POST COMMANDER'S CORNER

APRIL 2020

An update on American Legion Post 70

I know that by now everybody realizes Post 70 is closed until further notice because of the COVID-19 virus.  I also know that all of the family members of the Post are eager for the it to reopen and for things to get back to normal.  I am too! I cannot say for certain when the Post will reopen in some form.  We will follow the guidelines of the Federal, State, and Local Governments and the CDC. This is to ensure that we do everything in our power to keep all of our family members safe in this current environement.  The American Legion National Organization passed Resolution 3 which says in a nutshell that the National Convention scheduled for Louisville, Ky in August 2020 is cancelled. Also all events to include the National Oratorical Contest, The American Legion World Serires and other events scheduled through October of this year was cancelled. This same Resolution stated that ALL current Officers, Committees, and Comimission members of the National Organization would stay in place for the remainer of the 2020-2021 Legion year.  They recommended that ALL Departments in the American Legion follow their lead.  The American Legion Department of Georgia through a Department Executive Board teleconference voted to follow the lead of National.  The Department Conference scheduled for June 2020 in Duluth, Georgia has been cancelled and ALL officers of the Department, District and Posts in Georgia have been asked to stay in place for the remainder of the legion year. Thus, after a meeting of the Executive Board of Post 70, ALL current officers will remain in place thoughout the remainder of the year.  This pandemic that we are going through could not have come at a worst time. We had just completed a remodeling of the Post and was hopefull to have an outstanding year with the changes we made in regards to the activites and the work we do with the community at the Post. This too will end and I am hopeful that things will get back to normal very soon.  In the meantime, please follow the guidlines for safety that has been relayed to us.  Please practice Social Distances, Wash your hands often, and do all the other things that the guidelines suggest. We want to ensure that we do our part to keep ouselves safe and those around us.  The Legionnaires are now embarking on an effort to do "Buddy Checks" on members we have not seen for a while and even those that we have seen who are sick and shut in.  I urge each American Legion family member to do the same.

The American Legion Post 70 will come back strong, prehaps stonger and better than before. I will keep you updated as much as possible with the status of the reopening of the Post.  In the meantime, I am available to all of our members at any time and you may call me at 434-549-1025 or email me at jefultz1@yahoo.com. I am looking forward to working with each of you in some way during the upcoming year and any suggestions, ideas, and/or recommendations will be appreciated and acknowledged.
